A glance back at sunsets, soul, and color — and what better way to get there than through sound.
For Contemporary Throwback, we invited our friend Mark Wingco to translate the season into music.
Mark is the DJ, selector, and radio host who gets it. He understands mood, texture, and restraint. His approach is intuitive rather than performative - rooted in digging, listening, and letting things unfold at their own pace. That’s why it only felt natural to let him interpret the season without direction or interference.
Here’s how Mark describes the playlist, in his own words:
“I wanted to create a playlist that feels like tuning into a late-night radio dial. Something that keeps drifting, but never loses the mood.
It opens with warmth and confidence. Roots reggae, lovers rock, and glossy soul set the foundation - Barrington Levy, Christine Lewin, Anita Baker, Sade - creating a soft-focus glow where everything feels unhurried and intimate, like cruising with the windows down.
As it unfolds, funk and quiet storm bring a sense of ease and self-assurance, blurring into modern beat culture through artists like Knxwledge and Budgie.
Further in, the playlist gets murkier and more adventurous - underground rap, lo-fi electronics, and dusty house rhythms, moving from Shawty Pimp to Theo Parrish. Smooth soul meets raw street energy. Woozy samples. Hypnotic drums. Voices half-buried in the mix.
By the end, it settles into a quiet confidence. Music that doesn’t chase the moment, but knows exactly where it stands.”
For VINNY’s, that balance - past and present, polish and rawness, confidence without noise - is exactly what Contemporary Throwback is about.
